Francisco Gento Lopez syntyi Guarnizossa, Cantabrialla, 21. lokakuuta 1933. Jo pienenä poikana hän unelmoi pelaamisesta paikallisessa jalkapallojoukkueessa, Racing Santanderissa. Cercano a cumplir los 36 años, Gento se desplazó hasta tierras escandinavas donde intervino en el encuentro España-Finlandia, que finalizó con victoria española por 6-0. Este encuentro fue el primero de la era Kubala como seleccionador nacional.

Al partido se sumaron ilustres futbolistas de la época que formaron aquella noche con el Real Madrid, como el húngaro Bene, el portugués Eusebio o el ruso Dobrin. La delantera del Real que saltó aquella noche al terreno de juego estaba formada por Bene, Santillana, Eusebio, Dobrin y Gento. El homenajeado jugó durante veinte minutos. Durante ese período de tiempo hubo un penalti contra el equipo portugués y los aficionados, que llenaron las gradas a rebosar, corearon el nombre de Gento, en ferviente deseo de que el extremo madridista lanzara el máximo castigo, petición a la que accedió éste, consiguiendo así su último gol para el Real Madrid.
